Dr. Alex Glew is a local to this area.  He was born in San Francisco and grew up in the city of Pacifica, on the coast in San Mateo County.  He attended public schools in Pacifica, and Lick Wilmerding High School in San Francisco.  Subsequently, he attended and graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. and M.S., then found employment in the Silicon Valley. He worked for a decade at a mid-sized company that became a Fortune 500.  Next, he attended Stanford University to complete a Doctorate. Thereafter, he started a business he has run for 20 years.  He has lived in the South Bay since, including Mountain View, Saratoga, and Los Altos.  He has been married for 21 years to his wife Martha.  They currently live in Los Altos with their Golden Retrievers. He runs an engineering firm in Mountain View and is active in his community.

Business Leader and Professional

He spent the first decade of his career at Applied Materials then a small technology company that grew 40 times and became a Fortune 500. He served in technical and management positions and was a core technologist, one of 15 corporate experts.

As Mark Twain said, “education is wasted on the young.” After a decade in industry, he returned to pursue a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, during which he founded the engineering firm Glew Engineering Consulting  (http://www.glewengineernig.com). For over two decades he has run that company serving the Silicon Valley. Their work includes semiconductor technology, thin film processing, equipment design, and analysis. They serve other industries, both high and low tech. They design, analyze, perform computer modeling, CAD, FEA, CFD, and other modern aspects of engineering.

Due to his expertise, he is often asked to testify as an expert in Federal District Court, the US Patent Office, the International Trade Commission and other venues is an expert in semiconductor technology and mechanical engineering issues.  He has served as an expert for the Anti-Trust Division of the US Department of Justice in order to stop a merger, preserving thousands of jobs in the USA and vast tax revenues.

He knows how hard it is to keep a business running in the Silicon Valley and California (District 24) and to make jobs and payroll for others. He will strive to reduce reduce regulation to what is needed for the good of the people that still allows business to thrive. We need competition in order to have good jobs and opportunities.

Civic Duty

He takes to heart the idea of citizen volunteer, and serves on the Los Altos Design Review Commission, and is the immediate past Chair.  He listens to the applicants, their architects, engineering and builders to hear what they want to do and how the think they are meeting the City Design Guidelines. Next, he listens to the neighbors and their points of view and grievances.  Lastly, he listens and discusses with his fellow commissioners as they discuss the best course of action and what is best for the community.  His background as a licensed engineer and business person help him to understand the limitations that exist, and the solutions that are possible.

Some projects sail through smoothly.  However, about one quarter or so need to back to the drawing board on some issues.  Sometimes, they applications that do not meet the guidelines need to go back so that the applicants can work out some of the issues with their.  Sometimes tempers get hot; these are peoples homes at stake, but we try to head off neighborhood feuds before they start, preserving harmony in the community. Compromises and accommodations, along with some creative thinking, can in the end make for good and timely solutions to real world problems that hit close to home.  https://www.losaltosca.gov/designreviewcommission
